Block Party!

Hey,

The 14th Annual WORT Block Party helped kick off the Madison block party season Sunday, May 22nd. It inspired me to clue some folks in on some of my fav programs on WORT 89.9fm in Madison here.

WORT is one of the oldest, longest running, truly community-sponsored radio stations anywhere in the world!
In fact, it has been part of my life for so long I often take for it for granted that everyone would know about the essential shows like Entertainment, the vintage jazz show on Saturday Mornings (10am-12noon) or Back to the Country (Wednesdays 9am to 12noon) with old country, folk and blues on WORT... but if you've been missing out, let me hep you to those and others...

Sunday nights in general I have an affinity for, since I once hosted both The Weekly World Noise (11pm-2am Sunday nite/Monday morn) and In One End (2am-5am Monday morn)  for just under 10 years, between the two shows. Sunday evenings are still in good hands, with far out sounds seeping out of speakers across Wisconsin (and on the web) courtesy DJ's Destructo and Brian, respectively. Amazing, new, old, obscure and forgotten rock, progressive grooves and other weirdness. Gregory Taylor heads off the experimental evening with RTQE (Sundays 9pm-11pm).

Here are some more wonders. Whatchoo want?

FREE JAZZ brain blast from the past? Check JoAnne Pow!ers Fire Worship. (Tuesdays 2pm-5pm) It will not disappoint. Just the heavy shit. Jazz is an African Music.

So-real-it-hurts COUNTRY? (even if the youngsters do get in there once in awhile with their slick production values an' such) Bill Malone of  Back to the Country (Wednesdays 9am-12noon) is a tried and true American treasure, not to mention a Grammy nominee and renowned country music historian. And he's right here in little ol' Madison. This show makes my day EVERY TIME. Country music on a theme with great info and insight on the artists, straight from a man who loves what he does.

PSYCHEDELIC  and PROGRESSIVE ROCK? Dave 3000 spins all that and more on Kosmik Radiation.(Wednesday 2am-5am)

ROCK WEIRDNESS, SLACK  and NEW RELEASES? Psycho Acoustics(Wednesdays 8pm-10pm) is for you.

50's and 60's Rock, Rockabilly, Surf and Bubblegum? Rockin' John is your man! I Like It Like That!(Saturday night 6pm -8pm)

GARAGE-PSYCH RETRO, MOD, FREAKBEAT? The Leopard Print Lounge(Tuesday 11pm-2am) is where it's at.

ALTERNATE REALITY, INDEPENDENT FICTION FIX?  Fiction Jones (3rd, 4th, and 5th Fridays of the month 11-Midnight) wants you! Greg Willard spins, verbally, his own curious cyberpunk tales and those of others, sometimes reading atop a cut-and-paste, mish-mashed musical background whipped together by the man himself.

A well-needed, humorous take on the NEWS? Mel and Floyd will clue you in with monkey news, funky news and just plain funny news headlines from around the world.

Those are just some of my favorite shows I  am not even getting to talk about Who Cooks For You, Diaspora, The Vinyl Graveyard, Guilty Pleasures, Two for the Blues the killer local news on In Our Backyard... just so much, the list goes on and on...

Remember! All of these are archived for two weeks on the WORT ARCHIVES!
